Call of Duty brings some of the best multiplayer experiences every year with each new release, giving you a chance to spend hours battling your way through various enemy teams online.
This is no different when it comes to Call of Duty Vanguard, the 18th entry in the massively popular series of first person shooter video games, and a welcome return to the World War 2 setting of the first entry.
However, there are certain things that might get in the way of a smooth multiplayer experience, and one of those is the NAT Type error.
If you get an error message saying something like “NAT Type Error” for either Strict or Moderate, then you’ll want to solve the issue as soon as possible, otherwise your multiplayer experience is going to be ruined.
After all, a good NAT is needed to give you an online experience that is low in lag. When you’re trying to line up a quick shot on an enemy, lag is the last thing you need!

What Do The Different NAT Types Mean?
Before we explain how to fix the NAT Type Moderate error, it’s worth looking at what each NAT Type is and what you can do with each.
Each of them has different allowances for the player, and you’ll see that a Moderate or Strict NAT Type is very restricted – not what a player would want!
Open NAT Type
If you’ve got your NAT Type set to “Open” for Call of Duty Vanguard, then you’re going to have the normal multiplayer experience that you’d expect, with all the features you’d want.
Whether you’re playing on PS4, PS4, or Xbox, then you’ll enjoy these features:
The ability to join the multiplayer mode
The ability to host multiplayer games
The ability to chat with friends
Moderate NAT Type
However, when you’re got your NAT Type set to “Moderate” on any of those consoles, then your Call of Duty Vanguard multiplayer experience is going to be very different – for the worst.
Though you’ll still have small features, the majority will be restricted, severely affecting the fun you can have online with the game.
You’ll have:
The ability to only chat to a few people, not all
NO ability to host multiplayer games
Closed NAT Type
As you can guess, a Closed NAT type is the worst of all. If your NAT is “Closed” when playing Call of Duty Vanguard, then you’re going to be extremely limited in what you can do.
Whether you’re on PS4, PS5, or Xbox, you’ll have:
NO ability to host multiplayer games
NO ability to chat with any players
How Do You Check Your NAT Type?
As you can see, you’re only going to want to be playing Call of Duty Vanguard with the “Open” NAT Type, because the “Moderate” and “Closed” ones restrict the amounts of features you can use – and will impact and limit your multiplayer experience.
In order to check what NAT Type you have, it’ll take a few steps. However, the steps vary depending on what console you’re using, so we’ve got them all covered below:
PS4
If you’re using PS4, then you can easily check the NAT Type by going to the Settings section of the XMB menu.
After that, select the “Network” option from the list.
Finally, find the option there checking your Internet connection status.
PS5
Thankfully, the steps are very similar if you’re using a PS5.
First, go to the Settings menu of the console.
After that, select and open the “Network” section.
Finally, find the option to check your connection status.
Xbox
On the other hand, you might be using an Xbox. To find which NAT Type you have, first press the X button on your controller. This should open up the guide.
After that, look for the settings option, then enter it and go to “All Settings”.
Finally, you should be able to find a “Network” option here. Select it and it should give you a variety of information, including your NAT Type.
How Do You Set Your NAT Type To “Open”?
If you’re getting the “NAT Type Error Strict” or “NAT Type Error Moderate” messages while playing Call of Duty Vanguard, then you’ll want to go and set your NAT Type to “Open”.
This way, you’ll get to enjoy all the features of the multiplayer, being allowed to host games and chat to all players.
The process is going to be the same regardless of which console you’re playing on, because it involves doing the work through an Internet browser.
PS4 Or PS5
If you’re playing on either a PS4 or a PS5, then the process is the same.
First, you should check your router’s access address. It should be either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254.
Open a browser and enter your router’s address, then enter the login details that are listed on your router.
The username will usually be Admin and it’ll have a password for you to use, too.
Once you’re logged in on the browser, go to the advanced settings section and check if your UPnP is enabled. This stands for Universal Plug and Play.
Enable it if it isn’t already.
While you’re here, you’ll also need to assemble the ports.
This might take a little searching around on the internet, since the information you might need can vary depending on the router’s manufacturer and model number.
When asked for the Internal Host, simply enter your router’s IP address.
By the end, your NAT type should be set to “Open” and you’ll find that your Call of Duty Vanguard multiplayer experience is no longer restricted.
Xbox
If you’re playing on an Xbox console (such as the One, the Series X, or the Series S), then the process is the same.
By the end, you should find that you’re no longer getting the NAT Type errors when playing Call of Duty Vanguard.
