Who Made Apex Legends?

In the years since it was released, Apex Legends has become one of the most popular game titles out there, with regular updates and additions that have kept its loyal fanbase committed since day 1.

The game features such a wide variety of maps, characters, and weapons available, that it’s no surprise at all at how popular it is.

There’s even new content released every few months in order to ensure that the gameplay is kept as fresh as possible for its long standing fans.

However, if you’re new to the game, or you have been so wrapped up in the excitement and excellence of the gameplay, then it is easy to forget who actually developed and supports Apex Legends to this day.

So if you want to find out more about who developed and runs Apex Legends, then read on to find out more!

So Who Developed Apex Legends?

Apex Legends was developed by the massive game developer:

Respawn Entertainment, who also still supports the game to this day, ensuring that the game’s content is kept fresh as well as maintaining the balance amongst the weapons, maps, and characters that are all featured inside the game too.

Respawn Entertainment is a triple-A developer and have likely made some of your other favorite games too, some of their most notable successes include Titanfall, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and of course, Apex Legends (see also ‘When Did Apex Legends Come Out?‘).

Who Founded Respawn Entertainment?

Respawn Entertainment was founded by Vince Zampella and Jason West, who were both previously leads at Infinity Ward, one of the subsidiaries of Activision, which was primarily focused on the development of the Call of Duty franchise of games.

As a result of the success of the first Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game, both West and Zampella attempted to renegotiate the contracts that they held with Activision, which included bigger bonuses, as well as creative control, with the release of Modern Warfare 2 and the success of that instalment in 2009, Activision agreed, but only if they could retake control should they be fired.

As you can imagine, Activision then tried everything they could to fire the pair, so that they could have control of the series. In 2010, they were fired, and immediately opened up a lawsuit against Activision. Ultimately, it was a case that was settled out of court.

From here, both West and Zampella founded Respawn Entertainment, with their funding coming from the EA Partner Program, which ensures that the pair would retain the right to their intellectual property no matter what.

Along with them came 38 out of the 46 members of Infinity Ward that had been fired by Activision also.

From there, the rest is history, the releases of Titanfall in March 2014, Apex Legends in February 2019, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in November 2019 that have really helped Respawn Entertainment solidify themselves as a reputable game developer.

What has helped Respawn Entertainment massively in their journey was their acquisition by EA (Electronic Arts) in 2017, which cost them $151 million dollars in cash, or $164 million dollars in equity.

Since Apex Legends was released after this acquisition, it is no surprise then that it is such a high quality game.

In 2020, on the tenth anniversary of the founding of Respawn Entertainment, it was announced that they were opening a new studio in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This studio’s prime focus is the development and maintenance of Apex Legends, which is why the game continues to remain popular and the studio is able to keep up with updates and new content for its fanbase.

Apex Legends’ Release

The original release of Apex Legends dates back to the 4th of February, 2019. Which means that the game has now reached its 3rd year anniversary!

And despite being over 3 years old, the game still remains popular, and even draws in more and more new players every day, which is a credit to the longevity of the game, and the effort that the development studio put into it.

Apex Legends debuted to the world via a YouTube Livestream and was released with no prior teasing or announcement, not even so much as a mention at an E3.

The game stunned the gaming community and provided another rival amongst the growing list of battle royale-style games.

On the same day as the Livestream, the game was then released to the public across a multitude of platforms, including the Xbox One, PS4, and PC, amassing over a million downloads in the space of 8 hours, and within five days of its release, Zampella confirmed that it had reached over 25 million downloads across all of its platforms.

In April 2021, Respawn Entertainment confirmed that Apex Legends had reached over 100 million players, which was an incredible achievement for a game that had absolutely no marketing or press involvement in the buildup to its release.

Apex Legends’ success is thanks to a thriving competitive community as well as an immense amount of popularity on the streaming platform Twitch, averaging over 69,000 viewers a week even 3 years after its launch.

What’s Next For Respawn Entertainment?

Not too much is known about what comes next for Respawn Entertainment.

Apex Legends is still going strong even to this day, and the likelihood is that their focus is going to be ensuring that the game stays as fresh as possible for its player base as long as they continue to play.

There are also two unnamed Star Wars games in development, one being the sequel to the immensely popular Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and the other is rumored to be a Star Wars Strategy game.

Only time will tell what the future really holds for Respawn Entertainment.
